Title
Early-medieval pin: Spiral pin head
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy pin head of early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. AD 700-900). The pin has a spherical head, known informally as 'wrythen-headed', decorated with deep spiralling grooves. At the apex of the head there is a small indented annulet. The incomplete shank extends from a collar immediately below the head. The shank terminates in an old break.
Although spherical heads with grooving are a feature of several of Cool's types of Roman pin (e.g. Cool 1990, Group 13), there is no close parallel to this pin within Roman material. The form is well-known from middle Anglo-Saxon contexts.
